What this calculator does
The paver calculator estimates how many pavers are needed to cover a rectangular patio, walkway, landing, or similar hardscape area. It separates the mathematical requirement from the recommended whole-paver purchase quantity.
Basic formula
Project area is length times width. Paver coverage is paver length times paver width after unit conversion and any selected joint model. Theoretical pavers equal project area divided by paver coverage.
How to measure
Measure the length and width of the rectangular area you want to cover. Use the actual planned paved area, not the broader excavation or base area.
Paver dimensions and joints
If a manufacturer gives an installed module size or coverage, use that mode and enter those dimensions. If you only know the physical paver size, use the physical-size-plus-joint mode so one joint width is added to each module dimension. This simplified model avoids double-counting joints but does not optimize edge cuts or laying patterns.
Why allowance matters
A waste allowance helps cover breakage, cuts, color blending, and layout adjustments. The calculator preserves the fractional quantity internally and rounds only when recommending whole pavers or whole packages.
Worked example
A 10 ft by 12 ft project is 120 square feet. A 12 in by 12 in paver covers 1 square foot. The raw requirement is 120 pavers. With a 10% allowance, the estimate is 132 pavers. If packages contain 50 pavers, the recommendation is 3 packages, or 150 pavers purchased.
Limitations
This tool handles one rectangular area. It does not account for irregular shapes, laying patterns, border courses, paver cuts, herringbone optimization, base material, edging, drainage, structural requirements, or code compliance.
